Southerland?s suspension reportedly due to NCAA investigation into academic records

Syracuse forward James Southerland?s current suspension is due to an NCAA investigation into SU?s academic records The Post-Standard?s Mike Waters reports citing three sources familiar with the situation.

Southerland missed the No. 6 Orange?s last game, a 72-61 win over Villanova, because of the suspension and if he is not reinstated the forward will not able to travel with the team to Louisville, Ky., for its game against the No. 1 Cardinals on Saturday. The team is scheduled to depart Syracuse on Friday.

All three sources told The Post-Standard that Southerland was also nearly held out of the Orange?s previous game against Providence on Jan. 7 as part of the NCAA investigation, though that was for a matter unrelated to his current ineligibility.

His prior temporary suspension was cleared up quickly after he made a payment to reimburse for improper benefits. This one, two sources told The Post-Standard, centers on a term paper.

Former SU director of basketball operations Stan Kissel abruptly resigned in December. At the time, Kissel said he resigned for personal reasons.

Kissel also served as the liaison for the Academic Services Department. It remains unclear whether his resignation is at all related to Southerland?s suspension or the NCAA investigation.
