'Wall Street Journal' Launches Hub for Mobile Video From Journalists

As mobile technology and social sharing have reshaped the media industry in recent years, many legacy newsrooms have struggled to figure out just how to most effectively incorporate smartphone reporting into their content. Now, the The Wall Street Journal thinks it has found an innovative new approach.

It's called WSJ WorldStream, and it's a hub for mobile video shot via smartphone by the Journal's award-winning team of more than 2,000 journalists around the world. The platform launched Monday in conjunction with the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla.

Every video posted to the page undergoes editorial review. Nothing that appears will be over a minute in length, reinforcing the focus on quick snippets of video and audio information shot while on the go. San Francisco-based video-sharing startup Tout powers the processing and publishing of clips on the back end. The videos will also be incorporated into other WSJ.com content.

WSJ WorldStream is the newest piece of WSJ Live, the media company's video initiative which has launched four shows over the past year.

?Our video viewership has more than doubled in the past six months to over 20 million streams, and the creation of this video blog is a milestone in the expansion of video at the Journal,? Alan Murray, WSJ.com's deputy managing editor and executive editor said in a press release.

"We now have the opportunity to deliver that video more quickly and efficiently for use in our rapidly growing video operation," he added.

Do you think WSJ WorldStream is a blind stab at innovation by the Journal, or a cool new way to collect and package original mobile video? Share your opinion in the comments.
