Google Maps to feature an offline mode, 3D cityscapes, and off-road Street View

In an event held today, Google revealed three major changes coming to?Google Maps in the future, starting with the introduction of an offline mode for?Android phones and tablets. With offline mode, you can download maps of areas you want on your device, to be used when you're traveling overseas or when you know the place you're going to has patchy 3G or 4G reception.

Maps in offline mode will still work as if you were online?? you get full navigation and direction features, and you'll even be guided by the familiar blue dot that represents your location, using your device's GPS connection. It's unclear whether this feature will ever be available for the?iPhone and the?iPad. Recent reports reveal, however, that?Apple may be dropping Google Maps for its own software when it rolls out iOS 6.

The second in the list of three is the launch of 3D cityscape renders on Google Earth. Google will use airplanes to take aerial shots of cities, which will then be used to create 3D cityscapes. Within the next few weeks, you'll be able to view the 3D version of San Francisco (more places will come in the future) if you're using an Android or an Apple device.

Finally, you can expect to see more?off-road Google Street View locations, thanks to a wearable camera called Trekker. By strapping the Street View Trekker on a hiker, Google can take images of?national parks and other remote places to be viewed online.
