Is the new Microsoft tablet going to be something that will be worth considering vs an iPad? - Tanya

The natural inclination with any new tablet that hits the market is to begin by comparing it to the leader of the pack; the iPad.

In this case, the answer is both yes and no.

Microsoft seems to have figured out that going directly at the iPad with a 'me too' product would likely generate the same poor results as their attempt to go after the iPod with their now defunct Zune product line.

Instead, Microsoft is trying to build an 'ecosystem' around Windows 8 that will encompass your desktop, smartphone and tablet devices so that everything works the same and your applications and data are on everything.

Apple has done this with the iPhone/iPad/iPod but when you jump on a Mac OS computer, things work in a completely different way, even though they are still integrated. Apple is working towards the same unification goal with iOS 6 for their mobile platform and Mountain Lion for their Mac-based computers.

The Microsoft Surface tablets are a hardware extension of this very ambitious initiative that Microsoft has embarked upon and only time will tell if it hits the mark with consumers and the corporate world.

There will be two different devices aimed at completely different types of users, which is why I say yes and no to the iPad comparison question.

The entry level device will be called Surface and use a special OS called Windows RT. Think of it as the equivalent to Apple's iOS that runs on their mobile devices.

One of the points of differentiation for the Windows RT powered version is that it will come preloaded with a Home & Student version of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote) which makes it instantly more productive for Windows users that live in the Microsoft Office world.

The rest of what you can do will have to come from Microsoft's App Store.

One of the reasons that the iPad is such a popular device is because of the plethora of apps that have been developed for it: 225,000 plus another half a million iPhone apps that will also run on the iPad.

In order for the Surface tablet to give the iPad a run for its money, Microsoft is going to have to convince third-party app developers to start creating apps for this new platform.

As a hedge against that being the only way that this platform could gain traction, Microsoft added a completely different approach with the more expensive Surface Pro tablet.

This one will be powered by Windows 8 Pro, so it will essentially be competing with lower end laptops and ultrabook computers (and also priced like them $800-$1000).

Unlike a typical tablet, this one will be able to run virtually any program that you run on your home or office computer, so it will likely be more attractive to corporate users.

Some of the interesting features built-into both Surface devices include a magnetic cover that also doubles as a touch keyboard, a built-in stand on the back and a wider screen that more closely mimics a true wide screen television display so that movies don't have to have those black bars above and below.

The best guess is that the Windows RT Surface version will be released first (estimated August/September of 2012) followed shortly thereafter by the Surface Pro in time for the holiday season.

If you live on the Windows platform at your home and office and use an iPad as your tablet, you are the primary target.

If they can pull off making what you do at home or work seamless with the Surface devices, they certainly have the opportunity to make a dent in the tablet market, but that is a humongous IF!

International Atomic Time is a very accurate and stable time scale. It is a weighted average of the time kept by about 200 atomic clocks in over 50 national laboratories worldwide. Atomic time is measured through vibrations of atoms in a metal isotope that resembles mercury and can keep time to within a tenth of a billionth of a second per day. The result is extremely accurate time that can be used to improve synchronization in precision navigation and positioning systems, telecommunications networks and deep-space communications.

But from their careful observations of the positions of the stars, astronomers have deduced that Earth's rotation is ever so slightly slowing down at a non-uniform rate, probably attributable to its sloshing molten core, the rolling of the oceans, the melting of polar ice and the effects of solar and lunar gravity.??

Adjusting the clock

Today's atomic clocks are accurate to approximately one second in 200 million years. On average, our planet has been falling behind atomic time at a rate of about two milliseconds per day.? As a result, it now trails the "official" clock by about six-tenths of a second.?

As a result of this difference, atomic clocks, which are used to set all other clocks, can get out of sync with the Earth and periodically have to be adjusted.?A leap second has to be added from time to time to make up the difference.?

The next time will be Saturday, when the master clock at the United States Naval Observatory will be adjusted at 7:59:60 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, or 23:59:60 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). This will put Mother Earth about four-tenths of a second ahead of the clock, giving her a bit of a head start as we transition into the new month of July.?

How to see and hear the extra second

Today many retailers market radio clocks as "atomic clocks." Though the radio signals these clocks receive usually come from true atomic clocks, they are not atomic clocks themselves. Typical radio "atomic clocks" require placement in a location with a relatively unobstructed atmospheric path to the transmitter, need reasonably good atmospheric conditions to receive the time signals, and perform synchronization once a day, during the nighttime. If you own such a device, you may want to observe what your clock displays just before 0 hours GMT July 1, which corresponds to 8 p.m. EDT on June 30. The minute beginning at 7:59 p.m. EDT will contain 61 seconds.?(When a leap second was added in 2005, I watched my own clock closely during that minute as the seconds ticked off.? When the final second of that minute was reached, the number "59" flashed not once, but twice!)

High Blood Pressure Hospitalizations For Kids Double | Food ...

Hospitalizations for children with high blood pressure have nearly doubled in recent years, according to new data.

Researchers said the substantial increase may stem, in part, from childhood obesity, which now affects about 17 percent of children and teens in the U.S.

?Oftentimes we think that [hypertension] is a disease of adults,? said Dr. Debbie Gipson, an associate professor of pediatrics and communicable diseases at the University of Michigan Health System and an author on the study. ?This reminds us that our children have hypertension, and they have it enough that they end up in the hospital.?

Pediatric hospitalizations in the U.S. increased from about 12,000 in 1997 to 24,000 in 2006, according to the data, published in the journal Hypertension, Tuesday.

Estimates suggest that between 1 and 3 percent of children in the U.S. have hypertension. According to the American Heart Association,a ?normal? blood pressure level is relative among children, and doctors must make a calculation based on gender, height and age.

Heart and kidney disease can lead to blood pressure issues in children. The authors of the new study found that many children with hypertension in their discharge records were first diagnosed with something else, such as kidney conditions, lupus or pneumonia.

They also found that overall, the average hospital stay for children with high blood pressure doubled compared with those of other ill children. ?Here we see that in children with other health conditions, high blood pressure is complicating things,? said Gipson.

High blood pressure was listed as a primary reason for hospitalization for some children, which may indicate that their health issues are going unchecked.

Our current emotional state definitely affects? how we can strive to improve ourselves (through physical activities and healthy eating for improved physical health), and how we can give more love and service to the people around us (inspire others to improve their lifestyle).

Define your happiness and work on it. What makes you really happy? Think and feel it. If? being with and exercising with your special someone? makes you smile, then make an effort to communicate your concerns with your partner.

Focus on the positives rather than your flaws, then?? move on.? Stop wasting your time comparing yourself to others.?? Focus instead on your good traits and even your best physical features and always remember that character is? more important than appearance.

Count your blessings and opportunities. As soon as you wake up, thank God for giving you another opportunity to be happy once again. Think of what you have in your life right now and the opportunities you have in the next 24 hours.

This will help you get started on things that you find difficult to pursue, like another day of loving your body by taking care of your health, improving your fitness level and embracing your new lifestyle.

Nourish relationships. Be glad each day for having the most loving and supportive people around you. Return their love and concern by being your most radiant self, possessing?? the energy and cheerfulness to? positively influence them.

Learn from your shortcomings and always be ready to get up and start again. Always consider failures and weaknesses as opportunities and learning experiences to become a better person. The journey to improved health and fitness requires a sustained effort, everyday.
