2m iPhone 5 sales in China over debut weekend

Device will be available in more than 100 countries by the end of December.

Apple launched the iPhone 4S in China back in January, which prompted Beijing shoppers to go wild, ferociously attacking each other with fists and eggs when the Apple store refused to sell handsets for fear of overcrowding.

Less than a year later, and Apple released the iPhone 5 in the country on December 14th, which has seen sales of the device cross two million in just three days.

The Apple smartphone will be available in more than 100 countries by the end of 2012, marking the fastest iPhone 5 rollout to date.

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, said: "Customer response to iPhone 5 in China has been incredible, setting a new record with the best first weekend sales ever in China. China is a very important market for us and customers there cannot wait to get their hands on Apple products."

Meanwhile, iPhone 5 sales reached 5m during its original release weekend back in September.
