Veterans Looking For Work Can Transfer Military Skills Into Careers Thanks To A Law Sponsored By Brown & Amodeo

Veterans will be able to earn credit for their military training and experiences toward professional licensing requirements under a law recently signed by Governor Christie that was sponsored by Assemblymen Chris A. Brown and John Amodeo. The new law is a cornerstone piece of the two Assemblymen?s agenda helping veterans transition to the workforce.

?My military training taught me several disciplines that I still use every day,? Brown said. ?Employment challenges for returning veterans might seem surprising because they have advanced skills that employers want, but many simply get passed over because they don?t have a civilian licenses or certification.?

Governor Christie recently signed A-2882, which was sponsored by Brown, a highly-decorated combat veteran, and his Assembly colleague, John Amodeo, both R-Atlantic. Under the law, professional boards must provide license requirement waivers or exemptions for veterans who have had substantially equivalent training.

?Their skills were proven on the battlefield,? Amodeo said. ?They receive first-class training while wearing the uniform it?s a waste for them to have to re-learn the same skills before returning to work at home. We should honor their service by helping them use their qualifications to earn good jobs more quickly when they come home.?

The problem of unemployment after the military is widespread. More than 200,000 recent veterans remain unemployed, and nearly half a million more have dropped out of the labor force altogether.

?Our young men and women who serve make major sacrifices ? not just going into danger, but the sacrifice of time from their lives and families,? Brown said. ?This law will help support them when they get home.?
