Day trading the stock market involves the rapid buying and selling of stocks on a daily basis. This technique is used to secure fast profits from the constant changes in stock values, minute to minute, 2nd to 2nd. It is rare that a day trader will remain in a trade over the course of a night into the day after.

The main question that the general public ask when it comes to day trading is simple : ?is it critical to sit at a PC PC watching the markets twenty four seven to be a successful day trader??

The answer?s no. It?s not critical to sit at a P. C. twenty four seven. There are a number of things to consider, but sometimes the rule of day trading is to trade when everyone else is trading.

As with all fiscal investments, day trading is dodgy in truth, it is one of the riskiest forms of trading out there.

If you are restricted by a small amount of capital, you may not be able to buy large quantities of a stock, but purchasing only a bit can add to the risk of a loss. And, glaringly, it is not possible to predict with certainty which stocks will end up in profits and which in losses.

It is also important to know that in day trading, it?s the number of shares rather than the cost of shares that should be the focus. If you day trade, you?ll face losses, but even for the costlier stocks, the loss should be marginal, because prices do not usually fluctuate to an intense degree over the course of only one day.

The day trading industry deals in a big variety of stocks and shares. Here are just a few : Growth-Buying Shares shares made of profit, which keep growing in value. Ultimately, these shares will begin to decline in price, and a professional seasoned trader can usually predict the future of this type of share.

Small Caps shares of firms which are on the rise and show no symptoms of stopping. Although these shares are generally inexpensive, they are a very dangerous investment for day traders. You?d be safer to go with enormous caps and / or mid-caps, which are way more secure and stable thanks to a premium.

Unloved Stocks company stock that has not performed well during the past. Traders buy these shares in the hopes of generating profits if and when the stock rises in worth. As with tiny caps, unloved stocks can be a dodgy choice for day traders.

These examples are not your sole options when it comes to day trading stocks. The best way to figure out which type of stock is right for you is to invest some time for careful research, a knowledge understanding of market patterns, a solid strategy, and a controlled trading plan.

The key to successful day trading is to be prepared. Know as much as practicable about the industry before you start essentially trading. You need to be taught how to trade ONLY when the market gives the right signals.

Fed Beige Book ? New York: Economy Has Picked Up Somewhat ...

WASHINGTON (MNI) ? The following is the text of the Second District
assessment in Wednesday?s Beige Book survey of regional economic
conditions:

SECOND DISTRICT ? NEW YORK

Growth in the Second District?s economy has picked up somewhat
since the last report. Labor market conditions have been stable to
slightly stronger in recent weeks, and a sizable number of contacts say
they plan to add workers in the months ahead. While consumer prices
generally remain steady, business contacts in a number of industries
indicate rising cost pressures. Manufacturers report steady improvement
in business conditions. Most retailers and auto dealers describe sales
as steady but strong in February and the first few weeks of March.
Tourism activity has been mixed but generally strong since the last
report, with bookings for the months ahead described as robust. Home
sales activity has continued to strengthen since the last report, though
prices have been steady to somewhat lower; rental markets have continued
to improve, and there has been a pickup in rental multi-family
construction. Commercial real estate markets remained steady in the
first quarter of 2012. Finally, bankers report increased loan demand, no
change in credit standards, and the most widespread declines in
delinquency rates in a number of years.

Consumer Spending

Retailers report that sales were mixed but mostly steady and strong
in February and the first few weeks of March. One major retail chain
reports that sales were above plan and running more than 5 percent ahead
of year earlier in both February and March, led by strength in spring
apparel and accessories. Retail contacts in upstate New York report that
sales in recent weeks have been strong and running roughly on par with a
year earlier, which was also characterized as a very strong period, with
continued strong demand from Canadian shoppers. However, another major
retailer indicates that same-store sales were below plan and down
considerably from 2011 levels. Retail prices continue to be mostly
stable, but one major chain notes declining costs for apparel
merchandise. Inventories are generally reported to be at desired levels.

Auto dealers in upstate New York report that sales activity picked
up in February and has remained strong in the first few weeks of March.
Sales of new vehicles were up 4-7 percent from a year earlier in
February and remained fairly strong in March. Inventory stock-outs are
no longer a factor holding down sales. Business generally remains brisk
at dealer service departments, although dealers in the Buffalo area
report that unseasonably mild weather has reduced demand for
winter-oriented service. Wholesale and retail credit conditions remain
favorable.

The Conference Board?s latest survey of residents of the Middle
Atlantic states (NY, NJ, PA) shows confidence slipping moderately in
March, though it remains well above its lows of last October. Tourism
activity has been fairly robust since the last report, and hotel
bookings for upcoming months look strong as well. Albany area hotels
report rising occupancy rates in February. New York City hotels report
that total revenues per room were up roughly 6 percent from a year ago
in February and March, with particular strength in the last couple of
weeks. All of the increase reflects higher occupancy rates, as room
rates have leveled off. Moreover, an industry contact notes that advance
bookings are very strong and that room rates are poised to rise.
Attendance at Broadway theaters was fairly robust in February but has
tapered off in March, largely because fewer shows are running than at
this time last year; however, revenues continue to run ahead of 2011
levels, reflecting a substantial rise in ticket prices.

Construction and Real Estate

Housing markets across much of the District appear to have picked
up since the last report, while rental markets continue to firm. Home
sales are reported to be on the upswing in northern New Jersey, though
prices are steady to declining, largely due to more distressed
properties coming to market. One industry expert notes surprising
strength in new multi-family construction in New Jersey ? almost
entirely rental units ? thus far in 2012; this segment now accounts for
well over 50 percent of all new homebuilding, which is said to be
unprecedented. Apartment rental markets in both New York City and
northern New Jersey continue to firm, with inventories tight and rents
rising steadily. A major New York City appraisal firm notes that
Manhattan?s co-op and condo market has firmed since mid-February: while
prices remain flat, sales have picked up ? especially for studio and
1-bedroom co-ops ? and new contract activity is estimated to be running
7 percent ahead of a year earlier. Conditions in the outer boroughs have
been somewhat softer. Real estate contacts in western New York State
report continued gradual improvement in home sales activity but note
some downward pressure on prices.

Commercial real estate markets have been mixed but, on balance,
steady since the last report. Office vacancy rates in New York City and
on Long Island declined in the first quarter, while rents have risen
moderately. By contrast, office markets have slackened in northern New
Jersey, Westchester and Fairfield counties, and in Rochester. Most other
metro areas in upstate New York have seen steady to slightly declining
vacancy rates. Industrial markets across the District have been fairly
stable.

Other Business Activity

A major New York City employment agency specializing in office jobs
reports that hiring activity has held steady since the last report.
Legal hiring has picked up somewhat but for specific positions with
specialized qualifications, while finance-sector hiring remains modest.
More broadly, though, a sizable number of manufacturers and a growing
number of business contacts in other sectors say that they plan to step
up hiring activity in the months ahead.

Looking at business conditions more generally, manufacturers across
New York State report continued improvement since the last report, while
a growing proportion of non-manufacturing contacts report increases in
business activity. Business contacts in both manufacturing and other
sectors report that input costs are rising; however, selling prices are
reported to be holding steady, on balance.

Financial Developments

Small to medium-sized banks in the District report increased loan
demand in all categories, but particularly for commercial mortgages.
Bankers indicate increased demand for refinancing but to a less
widespread degree than in recent months. Credit standards are reported
to be little changed across all loan categories. Respondents note a
decrease in spreads of loan rates over the cost of funds for all loan
categories ? particularly for commercial and industrial loans where
well over two in five bankers report lower spreads, while none report
higher spreads. Respondents also indicate some decline in average
deposit rates. Finally, bankers report decreases in delinquency rates
for all loan categories. Moreover, the reported decreases are more
widespread among our banking contacts than at any time since the late
1990s.

Murder charge brought in Trayvon Martin case

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) ? Amid furious public pressure to make an arrest in the killing of Trayvon Martin, the special prosecutor on the case went for the maximum Wednesday, bringing a second-degree murder charge against the neighborhood watch volunteer who shot the unarmed black teenager.

George Zimmerman, 28, was jailed in Sanford ? the site of the shooting Feb. 26 that set off a nationwide debate over racial profiling and self-defense ? on charges that carry a minimum of 25 years in prison and a maximum sentence that could put him in prison for life.

In announcing the arrest, prosecutor Angela Corey would not discuss how she reconciled the conflicting accounts of what happened or explain how she arrived at the charges, saying too much information had been made public already. But she made it clear she was not influenced by the uproar over the past six weeks.

"We do not prosecute by public pressure or by petition. We prosecute based on the facts on any given case as well as the laws of the state of Florida," Corey said.

Martin's parents, who were in Washington when the announcement came, expressed relief over the decision to prosecute the killer of their 17-year-old son.

"The question I would really like to ask him is, if he could look into Trayvon's eyes and see how innocent he was, would he have then pulled the trigger? Or would he have just let him go on home?" said his father, Tracy Martin.

Many legal experts had expected the prosecutor to opt for the lesser charge of manslaughter, which usually carries 15 years behind bars and covers reckless or negligent killings, rather than second-degree murder, which involves a killing that results from a "depraved" disregard for human life.

The most severe homicide charge, first-degree murder, is subject to the death penalty in Florida and requires premeditation ? something that all sides agreed was not present in this case.

"I predicted manslaughter, so I'm a little surprised," said Michael Seigel, a former federal prosecutor who now teaches law at the University of Florida. "But she has more facts than I do."

Zimmerman's new attorney, Mark O'Mara, said Zimmerman will plead not guilty and will invoke Florida's powerful "stand your ground" law, which gives people wide leeway to use deadly force without having to retreat in the face of danger.

The lawyer asked that people not jump to conclusions about his client's guilt and said he is "hoping that the community will calm down" now that charges have been filed.

"I'm expecting a lot of work and hopefully justice in the end," O'Mara said.

Zimmerman, whose father is white and whose mother Hispanic, turned himself in earlier in the day and will make a court appearance as early as Thursday, when his lawyer plans to ask for bail.

Corey's decision followed an extraordinary 45-day campaign by Martin's parents to have Zimmerman arrested despite his claim that he shot in self-defense. They were joined by civil rights activists such as Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, as well as many politicians and supporters in Sanford and cities across the nation.

Protesters wore hooded sweatshirts like the one Martin had on. And the debate reached all the way to the White House, where President Barack Obama observed last month: "If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon."

The confrontation took place in a gated community where Martin was staying with his father and his father's fianc?e. Martin was walking back in the rain from a convenience store when Zimmerman spotted him and called 911. He followed Martin despite being told not to by a police dispatcher, and the two got into a struggle.

Zimmerman told police Martin punched him in the nose, knocking him down, and then began banging Zimmerman's head on the sidewalk. Zimmerman claimed he shot Martin in fear for his life.

A judge could dismiss the charge based on "stand your ground," legal experts said. But not if prosecutors can show Zimmerman was to blame.

"If you're the aggressor, you're not protected by this law," said Carey Haughwout, public defender in Palm Beach County.

Zimmerman's brother Robert Zimmerman told CNN on Wednesday night: "Our brother literally had to save his life by taking a life. And that's a situation nobody wants to be in, ever."

On Tuesday, Zimmerman's former lawyers portrayed him as erratic and in precarious mental condition. O'Mara, who signed on after Zimmerman's previous attorneys withdrew, said that Zimmerman seemed to be in a good state of mind but that the pressure had weighed mightily on him.

"He is troubled by everything that has happened. I cannot imagine living in George Zimmerman's shoes for the past number of weeks. Because he has been at the focus of a lot of anger, and maybe confusion and maybe some hatred, and that has to be difficult," the attorney said.

O'Mara also said the difficult case is compounded by the heavy media attention, which might make it hard to seat an impartial jury. Corey, similarly, complained: "So much information got released on this case that never should have been released. We have to protect this prosecution and this investigation for Trayvon, for George Zimmerman."

Corey, the prosecutor in Jacksonville, was appointed to handle the case by Republican Gov. Rick Scott after the local prosecutor disqualified himself. She has tried hundreds of homicide cases and is known for tough tactics aimed at locking up criminals for a long time and making it difficult to negotiate light plea bargains.

The U.S. Justice Department's civil rights division is conducting its own investigation. But federal authorities typically wait until a state prosecution is complete before deciding how to proceed.

Tensions had risen in recent days in Sanford, a town of 50,000 outside Orlando. Someone shot up an unoccupied police car Tuesday as it sat outside the neighborhood where Martin was killed. But as the hour of the prosecutor's announcement neared, the Martin family and their lawyer pleaded for calm.

Outside Sanford City Hall, Stacy Davis, a black woman, said she was glad to see Zimmerman under arrest.

"It's not a black or white thing for me. It's a right or wrong thing. He needed to be arrested," she said. "I'm happy because maybe that boy can get some rest."

Pigeons' homing skill not down to iron-rich beak cells

Wednesday, April 11, 2012

The theory that pigeons' famous skill at navigation is down to iron-rich nerve cells in their beaks has been disproved by a new study published in Nature.

The study shows that iron-rich cells in the pigeon beak are in fact specialised white blood cells, called macrophages. This finding, which shatters the established dogma, puts the field back on course as the search for magnetic cells continues.

"The mystery of how animals detect magnetic fields has just got more mysterious" said Dr David Keays who led the study.

Dr Keays continued: "We had hoped to find magnetic nerve cells, but unexpectedly we found thousands of macrophages, each filled with tiny balls of iron."

Macrophages are a type of white blood cell that play a vital role in defending against infection and re-cycling iron from red blood cells. They're unlikely to be involved in magnetic sensing as they are not excitable cells and cannot produce electrical signals which could be registered by neurons and therefore influence the pigeon's behaviour.

Dr Keays's lab, based at the Institute of Molecular Pathology in Vienna, worked together with Dr Shaw from the University of Western Australia, and Drs Lythgoe and Riegler from the UCL Centre for Advanced Biomedical Imaging in London.

"We employed state-of-the-art imaging techniques to visualise and map the location of iron-filled cells in the pigeon beak" said Dr Mark Lythgoe.

The search for the actual mechanism that allows migratory birds, and many other animals, to respond to the Earth's magnetic field and navigate around their environment remains an intriguing puzzle to be solved.

"We have no idea how big the puzzle is or what the picture looks like, but today we've been able to remove those pieces that just didn't fit," said Dr Keays.

Duck-billed dinosaurs endured long, dark polar winters

Wednesday, April 11, 2012

Duck-billed dinosaurs that lived within Arctic latitudes approximately 70 million years ago likely endured long, dark polar winters instead of migrating to more southern latitudes, a recent study by researchers from the University of Cape Town, Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas and Temple University has found.

The researchers published their findings, "Hadrosaurs Were Perennial Polar Residents," in the April issue of the journal The Anatomical Record: Advances in Integrative Anatomy and Evolutionary Biology. The study was funded through a grant from the National Science Foundation.

Anthony Fiorillo, a paleontologist at the Museum of Nature and Science, excavated Cretaceous Period fossils along Alaska's North Slope. Most of the bones belonged to Edmontosaurus, a duck-billed herbivore, but some others such as the horned dinosaur Pachyrhinosaurus were also found.

Fiorillo hypothesized that the microscopic structures of the dinosaurs' bones could show how they lived in polar regions. He enlisted the help of Allison Tumarkin-Deratzian, an assistant professor of earth and environmental science, who had both expertise and the facilities to create and analyze thin layers of the dinosaurs' bone microstructure.

Another researcher, Anusuya Chinsamy-Turan, a professor of zoology at the University of Cape Town, was independently pursuing the same analysis of Alaskan Edmontosaurus fossils. When the research groups discovered the similarities of their studies, they decided to collaborate and combine their data sets to provide a larger sampling. Half of the samples were tested and analyzed at Temple; the rest were done in South Africa.

"The bone microstructure of these dinosaurs is actually a record of how these animals were growing throughout their lives," said Tumarkin-Deratzian. "It is almost similar to looking at tree rings."

What the researchers found was bands of fast growth and slower growth that seemed to indicate a pattern.

"What we found was that periodically, throughout their life, these dinosaurs were switching how fast they were growing," said Tumarkin-Deratzian. "We interpreted this as potentially a seasonal pattern because we know in modern animals these types of shifts can be induced by changes in nutrition. But that shift is often driven by changes in seasonality."

The researchers questioned what was causing the dinosaurs to be under stress at certain times during the year: staying up in the polar region and dealing with reduced nutrition during the winter or migrating to and from lower latitudes during the winter.

They did bone microstructure analysis on similar duck-billed dinosaur fossils found in southern Alberta, Canada, but didn't see similar stress patterns, implying that those dinosaurs did not experience regular periodic seasonal stresses. "We had two sets of animals that were growing differently," said Tumarkin-Deratzian.

Since the Alaska fossils had all been preserved in the same sedimentary horizon, Fiorillo examined the geology of the bonebeds in Alaska where the samples were excavated and discovered that these dinosaurs had been preserved in flood deposits.

"They are very similar to modern flood deposits that happen in Alaska in the spring when you get spring melt water coming off the Brooks Mountain Range," said Fiorillo. "The rivers flood down the Northern Slope and animals get caught in these floods, particularly younger animals, which appear to be what happened to these dinosaurs.

"So we know they were there at the end of the dark winter period, because if they were migrating up from the lower latitudes, they wouldn't have been there during these floods," he said.

"It is fascinating to realize how much of information is locked in the bone microstructure of fossil bones," said Chinsamy-Turan. "It's incredible to realize that we can also tell from these 70 million-year-old bones that the majority of the polar hadrosaurs died just after the winter season."

Sudan mobilizes army as South claims key oil field

KHARTOUM/JUBA (Reuters) - Sudan said it would mobilize its army against South Sudan on Wednesday, and halted talks with Juba over oil payments and other disputed issues after the South occupied an oilfield vital to the North's economy.

With South Sudan in turn accusing Sudan of bombing a village on the southern side of their 1,800-km (1,200-mile) border, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the United States called for an end to clashes that threaten to spark a full-blown conflict.

South Sudan, which seceded in July, has been locked in an increasingly bitter dispute with the North over the fate of the formerly joint oil industry and other issues as fighting has escalated in the ill-defined border region.

South Sudan's army (SPLA) on Tuesday attacked Heglig, a disputed area containing an oilfield that accounts for about half of Sudan's 115,000 barrel-a-day output. The South's army claimed to be holding the oil wells.

"There is no doubt that Heglig area and the oil wells are under control of the SPLA," South Sudanese military spokesman Philip Aguer said, adding that the North's air force had bombed SPLA positions in Heglig and other areas.

A Sudanese official said he expected the fighting would hit oil output.

"I expect ... these oilfields will be affected, definitely, and at least there will not be production. If there is a conflict in the area, this is the least," said Rahamatalla Mohamed Osman, Sudan's undersecretary of foreign affairs.

Motorists worried about a possible disruption to fuel supplies formed lines at petrol stations to stock up as news of the Heglig attack spread through the capital, although the oil ministry issued a statement saying it had enough fuel.

The U.S. State Department condemned South Sudan's attack on Heglig, calling it "an act which goes beyond self-defense".

It also condemned Sudan's "continued aerial bombardment in South Sudan" and said the two sides needed to agree on an immediate cessation of hostilities.

Sudan's U.N. Ambassador Daffa-Alla Elhag Ali Osman said Sudan had exercised maximum self-restraint and if the U.N. Security Council did not condemn South Sudan's actions and demand it withdraw its troops, then Sudan would be forced to "retaliate severely deep inside South Sudan."

"We are ready for settling all the disputes with the south through peaceful negotiations, but with the recent developments they make it very difficult ... it would be extremely difficult to sit with somebody who has stabbed you in the back," he said.

UNRESOLVED TALKS

The South seceded from Khartoum's rule last year, but the two sides have not agreed on issues including division of national debt, the status of citizens in each another's territory and the exact position of the border.

Oil is among the most sensitive issues. Landlocked South Sudan shut down its roughly 350,000 barrel-per-day output in January in a dispute over how much it should pay to export crude using pipelines and other infrastructure in Sudan.

Sudan's remaining output only serves domestic consumption.

Each side accuses the other of backing rebels in their territory.

"I don't think there can be negotiations in this climate," Osman said. "What happened yesterday is a violation of international laws and an aggression on Sudan, and we have all the right to defend ourselves and regain the territories which were occupied by government of South Sudan."

South Sudan's forces pushed 70 km (40 miles) into Sudan's territory on Tuesday, Osman said. An information ministry statement accused South Sudan of "using mercenary forces and rebel groups" in the attack. Juba routinely denies such charges.

Following the incursion, parliament ordered a halt to negotiations with the South, Sudan's state media said.

State news agency SUNA said Sudan would order a general army mobilization but gave no further details. It quoted Defense Minister Abdel Raheem Muhammad Hussein as saying the army was capable of preserving stability and controlling the situation.

AU CALLS FOR WITHDRAWAL

SUNA said Sudan would halt all talks with Juba sponsored by the African Union and withdraw its negotiating team from Addis Ababa immediately.

The African Union called for the "immediate and unconditional withdrawal" of South Sudan's army from Heglig and urged restraint on both sides.

U.N. chief Ban contacted South Sudan's President Salva Kiir and Sudan's U.N. ambassador, urging both sides to exercise restraint and avoid further bloodshed, spokesman Martin Nesirky told reporters in New York.

"The Secretary-General urged (Kiir) to consider holding a presidential summit immediately to build confidence and assure the peoples of South Sudan and Sudan that peace and dialogue is the only option for both sides," he said.

South Sudan's Information Minister Barnaba Marial Benjamin said the Sudanese air force had bombed the village of Abiemnom in South Sudan's Unity state on Wednesday, wounding four people including a child.

He said South Sudan had been acting in self defense after Sudan launched a ground attack from Heglig late on Monday. Sudanese officials also said they were only trying to defend their territory.

Pets in the Bed: Are they Disrupting Your Sleep? | SleepTracker: Blog

good-night-sleep-with-pet

In honor of National Pet Day, we wanted to look at a common pet debate: Should pets sleep in bed with you? The fluffy, cuddliness of dogs and cats makes it easy to let them snuggle in at night. However, if you?re looking to get a good night?s rest, letting your pet sleep in the bed might be a bad idea.

The Mayo Clinic Sleep Disorders Center surveyed 300 patients with sleep problems. Turns out, about 25 percent of insomniacs could have sleep issues because of their pets. Pawnation reviews some of the findings:

?John Shepard, MD, the center?s medical director, found that more than half owned pets, and of those, nearly 60% slept with their pets in the bedroom. Overall, 53% of pet owners felt their sleep was disrupted to some extent every night.?

Typically, if a dog or cat is sleeping in the bedroom, it?s sleeping in the bed with you. So what can you do to wake up well-rested if you?re a pet owner? Here are a few ideas from our pet-owning friends:

  1. Reduce trips for potty breaks. A healthy dog should be able to wait until morning to be let out. Take away the water bowl a few hours before bedtime, and take your doggy out just before you head to bed.
  2. Introduce white noise. A fan or radio static will disguise a pet?s night noises?leading to fewer interruptions in your sleep.
  3. Switch to a crate. A big, comfortably crate with a cozy blanket is a great place for a pet to sleep. Training your fuzzy friend to sleep in one can help you get a healthy night?s sleep.

Having a pet is good for your health, so make sure you?re not letting them do you wrong by keeping you up at night!

Do you sleep with a pet? Do you have tips to share for getting a good night?s sleep? Share them with us on Twitter!

Andrea Learned: Sustainability's Neglected Frontier: The Young and the Entrepreneurial

Where should we be looking for sustainable business change today? Perhaps it should not be toward the usual corporate suspects, many of which are slow to decide on even minor operational and product development shifts. The more compelling view may instead come from looking in the entrepreneurial direction.

I've been covering corporate sustainability for a while now, but, admittedly, my passion for it has waned. What most big companies can achieve in their attempts to change centuries old operational systems struggles to compare with the game-changing energy, ideas and commitment I've recently come across in the young entrepreneur community. The potential sustainability impact of what those in Seattle (my own city) and those of similarly innovative minds on many other college and university campuses across the nation/globe is what strikes me to the core of my ever-hopeful, change-through-business soul.

A week ago I spent a day with representatives of the Pacific Northwest's emerging generation of sustainability and socially-minded entrepreneurs, and it blew me away. To fully disclose, and though the thoughts I share here are my own, I participated in this event in my social media role for the University of Washington's Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, covering their Environmental Innovation Challenge (EIC). After being at this gathering, I realized that corporate sustainability likely has nothing better than the potential for paradigm shift that bubbles inside the men and women now attending our colleges and universities.

But, back to the actual event. As the 23 student teams made their two-minute pitches early on, it was all my Twitter-happy fingers could do to capture each of their cool ideas and smart thinking. And, I was not the only one impressed. Even the highly experienced Seattle-area entrepreneurs who judged the challenge seemed to have the same feeling as me, which was that our economy will do just fine -- as long as we identify, support and encourage this generation of student sustainability innovators. (Many also said something like "Darn, why wasn't I this smart when I was that age?")

A quick look at three of the winning innovations from this one event demonstrates why there is great sustainability promise in our next generation of entrepreneurial minds:

? An alternative to freeway "jersey barriers" made from something so often found lying shredded near them: old tires.
? Sustainable shelter-building materials packaged in an easy to transport barrel as an alternative to post-disaster relief transitional housing.
? A radical re-design of non-stick cookware surfaces that eliminates the coating altogether. (More on those innovations, including some video.)

Such incredible ideas might never have made it to prototype or professional business plan format were it not for an approach now starting to get more emphasis on campuses: multi-disciplinary collaboration. The various combinations of students developing these particular innovations, in fact, reflected a mix of undergraduate and graduates, and included engineering and science students working right alongside business majors. Creation at this level comes from true teamwork, and sustainability innovation demands collaboration like nothing else.

If I seem enthusiastic, it's because I've been so newly reminded of this and want to spread the word: Students are not some separate entity to be forgotten (until they graduate) in our struggling but sustainability-pursuing economy. Instead, these inspiring men and women are the beginning of a talent pipeline that is already changing our world.

Before our very eyes, sustainable innovation is turning the young and restless into the young and entrepreneurial. Here's hoping your company is paying attention.

Microsoft Still Fighting For Windows Phone Developer Love

By Chris Velazco

Microsoft (MSFT) is pushing their Windows Phone platform like crazy these days - it recently debuted in China, and the flagship Nokia Windows Phone is due to hit U.S. shelves shortly with a huge marketing blitz in tow - but the company still has a little app problem to deal with.

More than a few developers still don't see developing Windows Phone apps as a priority, and the New York Times reported yesterday that Microsoft is doing what they have to in order to change those minds. Among other things on their list of tactics, Microsoft has offered to fund process of bringing big-name apps to Windows Phone "where it makes sense."

Microsoft is no stranger to this sort of thing - they've offered plenty of free Windows Phones to developers in the past in an effort to spark some interest in their still-growing platform. Hell, Microsoft has been offering financial support to developers since before the first Windows Phones were even released.

Among the parties who have taken up Microsoft on their generous offer is Ben Huh of Cheezburger Network fame (not to mention soon-to-be reality TV star), who told the Times that Microsoft "took care of everything" when it came to developing a lolcat-touting Windows Phone app. Foursquare jumped on the wagon too, with bizdev head Holger Luedorf mentioning that a Windows Phone app was low on their list of priorities until Microsoft offered to underwrite its development.

Despite Microsoft's paradoxically small presence in the mobile space they've got a decent-sized checkbook to play with. I can't blame Microsoft for trying to buy love from developers - right now, they're just fighting to keep up with major releases that have already found their way to other platforms. If they want to stand any chance at gaining traction in this market, they've got to give their customers the impression that they're not missing out on anything by taking a chance on Windows Phone.

Take the Angry Birds kerfuffle for example - Rovio CMO/Mighty Eagle Peter Vesterbacka ruffled more than a few feathers when he remarked that Angry Birds Space wouldn't find a home on Windows Phone. Rovio followed up the next day with news that the franchise's latest game would indeed make the WP transition, but writers and pundits had plenty of fun with the news while it lasted.

That's exactly the sort of thing Microsoft needs to avoid, and it seems as though they'll grease the palms they need to to keep it from becoming an issue. While those highly popular, big-name apps may keep consumers from regretting their choice of smartphone, Microsoft still has another issue to contend with: many of the apps to be found are awful.

You see, the news comes just a few days after the number of apps in the Windows Phone Marketplace tip-toed over 80,000 (that includes region-specific apps, your mileage may vary). It seems like it would be quite an achievement, and it gets them that much closer to the milestone, but sifting through the junk can be a hell of a thing. My former colleague (and my favorite Belgian) Robin Wauters has a great piece on The Next Web about how the Windows Phone app store is populated by questionable, derivative crap.

Make no mistake, Microsoft knows about these cr-apps. Last year, they had to cut down on the number of apps a developer would be able to submit to the Marketplace in a single day, from 20 down to 10. It was all in an effort to stem the hordes of spammy app submissions that would flood the Marketplace's New section, which meant that actual good apps from honest developers may not get the shot they deserved. It's an environment that doesn't always seem very conducive to developers on the up-and-up.

And there will be plenty of those developers, if Microsoft has anything to say about it. The Wall Street Journal notes that Microsoft has put plenty of time and money into sponsoring over 850 developer sessions across the globe in 2011, which the Journal says is triple the number they held the year before.

Now, it's awfully easy to rag on Microsoft and Windows Phone for its app troubles, but they've got a great opportunity here. The Windows Phone platform is the youngest of the major smartphone OS competitors, and while it isn't as pervasive or as popular as iOS or Android, this sort of hands-on approach may end up paying off big time. It's a fight that must be fought on multiple fronts - Microsoft should ideally be more stringent with submissions but keep the process smooth for well-reputed and promising developers, as well as making sure those big-name apps keep pouring in. Whether or not Microsoft's machinations will make for a real three horse race remains to be seen, but you can bet that won't keep the folks in Redmond from trying anyway.

Week 2 ? FCHP Spring Into Action Fit in 45 Day ... - Worcester Fitness

8 days down ? how are you doing on the challenge? Hopefully, visions of a more active and fit you on May 15 is helping you work through the challenges of the challenge. (and the chocolate bunnies and jelly beans are all gone!)

Losing weight (and keeping it off) takes a huge commitment and a willingness to challenge those behaviors that have not served you well.

You have the blueprint for success (meal plan, exercise plan, coaching support). Hopefully over this past week, you?ve started to modify your eating habits by sticking to the portions/calories of the healthy meal plan for the challenge. You?ve incorporated cardio intervals and strength training exercise into your daily routine, and you are taking some time each day to sit quietly and reflect on the positive things in your life. You are drinking 8 glasses of water. All positive ACTION steps.

But, there?s another equally important process ? the ?BELIEVING I CAN DO THIS? step.

In her book ?The 85% Solution? by Linda Galindo, Ms. Galindo has defined 3 important steps for success ?

1. Take responsibility for the outcome,
2. Empower yourself to succeed,
3. Be accountable for your actions

Life happens and it?s very easy to make excuses. But remember, this challenge is about YOU and helping you reach your personal best. As you ponder these 3 steps, let me highlight the major components of the challenge:

Meal plan: Women should be eating between 1200-1500 calories daily, men 1800 ? 2000. The #1 tool of successful losers is a food log. Keeping track of your portion size and the quality of the food is very important. Choosing food from each of the food groups will ensure that you are getting the important nutrients and vitamins.

You can submit food logs to my attention via Sue Pacy in Human Resources, or you can drop off your log at either Worcester Fitness location. Please add your name to the logs and add your weekly weight.

Exercise/Activity: Everyone should be doing a 30 minute cardio Interval workout, 6 days a week. This is week 2, so your FAST time is 2 minutes FAST to 1 minute NORMAL. You define your own FAST using the RPE scale:

Using a Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) Scale of 1 ? 10, (1 is a gentle walk and 10 is a sprint) your NORMAL would be about a 5 and your FAST would be about an 8.

Strength Training: If you?re on Level 1, you have your circuit workout. For incredible results, doing the Monday/Thursday, Tuesday/Friday routine will really tone your muscles.

Level 2 participants ? How are those toning classes going? There are some great classes (in and out of the pool) to help you reach your goals. Try them all. Minimum is 2 classes a week, but 3 would be ideal!

Level 3 participants, in addition to doing some cardio work, incorporating at least 2 days of strength training will be extremely beneficial.

Quiet Time: Stress plays havoc with our bodies and research has shown a direct correlation to weight gain as the stress hormone Cortisol surges through our bodies. It not only slows down metabolism, it can cause cravings, alter blood sugar levels and contribute to greater levels of abdominal fat.

Take 10 minutes every day to sit quietly and JUST BREATHE! It?s amazing how relaxed you will feel by focusing on your breath for a few minutes each day.

As you head into Week 2 remember the reasons you signed on for this Challenge! Plan for success and you will reach your goals.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help!

Have an awesome week!

Hi Nancy!

I?m sorry, I?m not working any hours at the club right now!

The next time you?re at the club, you could ask the front desk staff to check to see if there is any availability for one of the other personal trainers to do an orientation. Kat or Bob would be very helpful.

The other thought would be to try a toning class. You?d learn many strength training exercises. I heard that a group is going to the Morning Pump classs at 6:00 a.m. and I know that the Hi-Def Sculpt class on Thursdays at 5:30 (i believe) is great.

Let me know how this works out!

Sitios web.0 ideal in Social Internet promotion | Marketing

Today in internet marketing you have to embrace social marketing to be able to succeed. Simply because in the dominance of online social network sites like myspace, facebook, twitter and many others which we now consult as Web 2 ..0.
The network sites in Web 2 . 0.0 are crack houses for socialising not centres of trade. These include where people visit interact, socialize and build friendships with similar people.
As web entrepreneurs you should grow our businesses you desire you can but to push our products and opportunities on just everyone , without permission, will simply blacklist us eventually. People will just shun us.? Good entrepreneurs have adopted ?permission marketing? and stopped spamming.

ONLINE Online community STRATEGIES.

As a web-based marketer and web based business owner, we have to adapt to changes online to keep on top of the very best options for marketing so that you can maintain profitable. As every one of the individual individuals get their own number of rules, we must master the employment of Web 2 . 0.0, to know the best way to use the internets internet sites, article writing, social bookmark management, or possibly a combined every one of them. It?s important to study various sorts of memberships and the kinds of folks that join,? what are their interests, the things they?re doing while they?re there and interact with them accordingly.

As marketers, just socialising at these web sites is not enough, we need to be able to project ourselves for being capable of giving value because they are capable of provide solutions, tips, guidance, recommendations, etc. An individual will be called someone of worth for many years, are going to thinking about anything you have to give, or they should recommend that you their friends and that is where the real power of online community rests.

ARTICLE WRITING.

Article marketing sites are an excellent social marketing avenue that many of us as web marketers are able to use totally free to include value to the target market. Article submission sites like article dashboard or content sharing sites like squidoo or hubpages get their own range of rules that you follow.

They vary to the social networking sites in terms of how you connect to your audience. With article advertising you are submitting short value based articles that teach your target audience an element that would benefit them a hyperlink aimed at your website or blog while in the bio at the end of your article as opposed to acquiring buddies such as you do on the places to waste time.

With article marketing you keep to the same rules when you do with any social marketing site. You never push your products or services or business opportunity on people; most of these tactics are certainly not allowed and can ensure you get banned from the site if you it repeatedly.

SOCIAL BOOKMARKING STRATEGIES.

Another GREAT social web marketing strategy is to try using submitting of social bookmarks in the internet business building effort. It?s really a little different compared to the other ways of social marketing I pointed out and works excellent as well as marketing with articles.

Social bookmarking sites are membership sites that you can join and post bookmarks for your articles and website content which in turn becomes viewable by the people in that website. It is also common to see your bookmarks visible on the major search engines.

Like all social marketing sites you dont strive to be posting just your own content since it enables you to appear to be somebody that is selfish and a spammer. You would like to connect to folks in the site, comment on their bookmarks and reveal that you are not just there to push your agenda.
Social marketing is often an excellent way to build your business if performed correcly. That can assist you stick out in social marketing look at this Web based course .
