Northern California recycling: Alameda, Kings and Placer counties

California may be one of the most progessive of the 50 United States, but Californians still have a long way to go in helping clean up this corner of the world. Depending on where one lives in northern California, there are different regulations as to what can be recycled and where it can be disposed of.

There are 48 counties that are considered part of northern California. Just three of those counties - Alameda, Kings and Placer - are the focus of this article. Other counties will be featured in future articles.

Alameda County is located in the east bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area. The cities of Oakland and Berkeley are located in Alameda County. StopWaste.org is responsible for Alameda County's waste management, source reduction and recycling programs. The organization works with local government, business and industry, schools and residents to develop and implement programs that reduce the amount of waste Alameda County sends to landfills. StopWaste.org has a program called the Recycling Wizard that helps county members learn where and how to recycle.

Kings County is one of the southernmost counties in northern California. It is situated in the rich agricultural region of the Central Valley. Kings County is home to the U.S. Navy's newest and largest jet air station, NAS Lemoore. Environmental Health Services is responsible for the solid waste program in Kings County. All household hazardous waste materials in this county are maintained at a permanent Household Hazardous Waste facility in Hanford. The county conducts community events for the collection of these materials.

Placer County is located in the eastern section of northern California in what is known as Gold Country. It stretches eastward from the suburbs of Sacramento to Lake Tahoe and the Nevada border. Western Placer Waste Management Authority?(WPWMA) is responsible for disposal and recycling services for several Placer County communities as well as the County of Placer. WPWMA offers tours of its Materials Recovery Facility and accepts electronic waste (E-Waste) free of charge from an resident living in Placer County.
