updated 10:03 p.m. ET Jan. 7, 2012

AUCKLAND, New Zealand - Unseeded Zheng Jie won the ASB Classic for her fourth career singles title and first since 2006 when Flavia Pennetta retired because of a back injury in the third set Sunday.

The 28-year-old Chinese player was leading 2-6, 6-3, 2-0 when the fourth-seeded Pennetta, who required courtside treatment for the injury, indicated she was unable to continue.

The final was played indoors after it was postponed Saturday because of rain.
