Nationals rough up Lincecum, Giants

WASHINGTON (AP) - All-Star shortstop Ian Desmond hit his 14th home run, and the Washington Nationals became the latest team to beat up on Tim Lincecum, pounding the struggling right-hander hard early and often Tuesday night in a 9-3 victory.

The opener of the three-game series between first-place teams was barely a contest. Jordan Zimmermann (5-6) pitched a rain-shortened six innings and again enjoyed the generous run support that had evaded him for so long, ensuring the Nationals would wake up on the Fourth of July with a 3 1/2-game cushion over the New York Mets atop the NL East.

Lincecum (3-9) allowed eight runs and nine hits in 3 1-3 innings. Seven runs were earned, making it the worst start ERA-wise in his major league career. The two-time Cy Young Award winner started to look his old self again in his previous two starts, but Tuesday's effort ballooned his ERA to 6.08.

Desmond, one of a trio of players the surging Nationals are sending to the All-Star game next week, hit a two-run shot to left field in the third. He had already topped his best power season in the majors, and now he's surpassed the 13 homers he hit with Single-A Potomac in 2007. He also has an eight-game hitting streak, including extra base hits in six of those games.

Washington scored two in the second, three in the third and three in the fourth. Every player in the starting lineup had at least one hit except catcher Jesus Flores, with even Zimmermann contributing an RBI double in the second inning.

Zimmermann was one of four players to double off Lincecum, who was removed after sandwiching walks around Bryce Harper's double to load the bases with one out in the fourth. Reliever George Kontos allowed all three inherited runners to score, putting the Giants in an 8-0 hole.

Zimmermann has become known as the hard-luck Nationals starter who never gets any help. He leads the team with 14 quality starts, but the team is only 9-7 when he pitches. The tide has turned in his last two starts, an 11-5 win over Colorado to go with Tuesday's knockout of the Giants, his first win at home since last August. He had been winless in his last eight starts at National Park, with his team giving him a combined 10 runs of support while he was in the game.

The Giants scored a pair on Zimmermann in the fifth, but it took a summer storm to send him to the showers. He was on the mound when rain started to fall in the seventh inning and was replaced by reliever Ryan Mattheus after an 85-minute delay.

Notes: The teams have an 11:05 a.m. first pitch for the Fourth of July. Someone with a sense of humor added a 6 a.m. batting practice to the schedule written on the whiteboard in the Nationals clubhouse. ... Desmond is 9 for 12 lifetime against Lincecum. ... The Nationals placed RHP Chien-Ming Wang on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hip and reinstated RHP Henry Rodriguez. Rodriguez, who went on the DL on June 7 after slamming his right index finger in a bathroom door, came on in the ninth to retire the game's final batter.

Gaia spacecraft to be flung 1.5 million km from Earth

The European Space Agency is continuing to prepare for the launch of its Gaia spacecraft set for 2013. Gaia's mission will see it creating a 3D map of a billion stars in the Milky Way using a 1.5-gigapixel camera.

In this photo, taken at the EADS CASA test facility in Madrid, Spain, checks are being made on Gaia's 1.5-metre-wide antenna panel to ensure data will reach Earth safely. The foam spikes on the walls of the test room block radio signals to simulate space. Electronic steering will ensure the antenna is always directed towards its target while the spacecraft rotates in space as it maps the stars, asteroids, extrasolar planets and other objects.

After launch, Gaia will take up an orbit around the sun 1.5 million kilometres beyond, but in pace with, Earth's to minimise the distance the weak signal has to travel. During its initial five-year mission, Gaia will send an estimated 200 terabytes of data to radio dishes in Spain and Australia. A working antenna is obviously central to downloading this data safely.

Facebook rolls out same-sex icons for gay marriage

Jeremy Hooper was the first to use the new same-sex marriage icon Facebook rolled out on Sunday. The writer, activist and author of the new book "If It's A Choice?" updated his Timeline over the weekend with his June 2009 Connecticut? marriage to healthcare CEO Andrew Shulman with a photo of the happy couple, and a two-groom, cake topper-style image.?

Before Sunday, gay Facebook users who wanted to indicate their marital status on the social network were relegated to the bride-and-groom, cake topper-style icon. The new Facebook icon choices ? two grooms or two brides ? allow gay newlyweds "to see themselves in the choices they make, and that means a lot," Allison Palmer, Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLADD) spokesperson, told msnbc.com.

Hooper's Timeline update with the new icon was soon followed by that of Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes, who married Sean Eldridge on Saturday.

Facebook's new icons come two weeks after Apple updated its iPhone operating system with gay and lesbian emojis ? texting and email emoticons ? featuring same-sex couples and families. The support also extended to an unlikely corner of the Web last week, on Oreo?s Facebook page. The cookie company posted a six-layered, rainbow-hued Oreo cookie to Facebook and Twitter. Unlike the concept cookie however, the Facebook icons actually exist.

Palmer said the addition of the same-sex marriage icons is the latest in Facebook's support of the LGBT community. In February 2011, the social network added civil unions and domestic partnerships to relationship status options. In 2010 Facebook, GLADD and other LGBT organizations created "Network of Support," the social network's initiative to combat cyberbullying and support LGBT teens. In June, Facebook received a GLADD media award for its support of the LGBT community.

While gay marriage is now recognized everywhere on Facebook via the new same-sex cake topper icons, it's still only legal in nine of the United States, and even in those states, gay married couples don't receive the same tax benefits as heterosexual married couples. Still, the visibility offered on Facebook can help pave the way for more gay rights in the future, said GLADD spokesperson Rich Ferraro.

"Facebook offers another platform where people can see same-sex couples are just as committed and loving? as any couple," Ferraro told msnbc.com. "People can see photos of families and come to realize we deserve the same opportunities to love and take care of each other."

While the new Facebook cake-topper offerings "are just a small icon, young adults can see that they too can hopefully have that opportunity to love and be happy in their future."

Youappi Secures $1 Million To Address App Discovery And Distribution In A Chaotic Market

Youappi, the cross-platform app distribution startup which competes with Fiksu, has secured $1 million in seed funding from undisclosed Angel investors. It's now launching its solution on Tappible, a monetization and engagement platform for mobile applications. Youappi, which is based between Israel and New York, was founded by CEO Moshe Vaknin who left to do Youappi from Todacell last month. Youappi is trying to address the challenge of app discovery. You know the score - it's tough to find great apps. Appsfire and others are working well on this issue, but there's plenty more work to be done.
