Obama on 'Idol' Feud: Nicki & Mariah Will "Sort it Out"

As he prepares for his second debate with Mitt Romney, President Barack Obama is on top of current events -- including the feud between American Idol judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj. During an eight-minute interview for Miami radio's "The Yo Show," Obama was asked what he could do to repair the divas' differences.

Over 1 billion smartphones are in use right now

1 hr.

I'll skip the "A million isn't cool, you know what's cool?" joke and tell you the news: There are currently over one billion smartphones in use around the world.

This statistic comes from the research firm Strategy Analytics, which explains that this milestone was reached for the very first time in the third quarter of 2012.?

It took 16 years for the smartphone industry to get here.

Strategy Analytics senior analyst?Scott Bicheno says the 16-year counter starts with the Nokia Communicator, introduced in 1996. Many consider it to be the first smartphone. "Nokia remained a dominant force in smartphones for over a decade," Bicheno says, "until the arrival of Apple?s iconic iPhone in 2007."

At this point, the firm estimates that one in seven individuals in the world owned a smartphone during the third quarter of 2012. And given how much room there is for growth in the smartphone market, that number will grow quickly.

"The first billion smartphones in use worldwide took 16 years to reach,"?Strategy Analytics executive director Neil Mawston?says. "But we forecast the next billion to be achieved in less than three years, by 2015.?

To live and work at CERN

Glenn Starkman has traded his comfortable life in unexpectedly wonderful Cleveland (Heights), Ohio for the excitement and alpine scenery of global diplomatic and particle physics capital Geneva, Switzerland.? While every scientist he meets tells him this will be ?an exciting time to be at CERN? he will set aside a few moments each month or so to share his observations of
life in the fast lane with his fellow Scientific American readers.

Nestled among the vineyards outside Geneva, surrounded by the lush slopes of the Jura mountains on one side and the rugged snow-capped Alps on the other sits CERN, the premiere laboratory for particle physics in the world. Here is the home of the Higgs, or at least of the Large Hadron Collider and the ATLAS and CMS detectors that appear to have finally discovered this important piece of the Standard Model.

More than that, with the US having abruptly cancelled the post-war pre-eminence in accelerator physics that brought it discovery after discovery, and their attendant technological spinoffs, CERN is not just the Rome to which all European (and many non-European) roads in particle physics lead, but the gathering place of the exiles awaiting the return to Zion (or Batavia, IL or Menlo Park, CA), if only the U.S. Congress would foot the bill.

Straddling as it does the Swiss and French borders, you would imagine this contemporary Tower of Babel to be a place where fine Gallic taste and precision Helvetic expertise combine to create a cosmopolitan scientific paradise ? a workplace that is both beautiful and functional. Nahh. If only the fictional accounts of luxury and high design held the least grain of truth. Dan Brown: dream on.

To say that CERN?s buildings are brutalist would be to mistakenly ascribe intentionality to this motley assortment of nakedly utilitarian lumps of concrete scattered helter skelter without obvious plan or purpose. Over here is a reception, museum and gift shop connected to the main service hub and conference center by a maze of administrative and scientific offices with corridors leading off at irregular angles to more corridors, offices and experimental halls. There in the middle is a central auditorium (and governing Council meeting chamber) thrusting boldly over a circular driveway but reached by threading past the backsides of industrial buildings and their asphalt parking lots.

The street names, honoring illustrious physicists of the past, attempt to provide a touch of character, but they connect buildings labeled only by number. 33-5-4-58-3-50-500. A secret code? A mathematical sequence describing the properties of a new family of fundamental particles? No. The building-by-building route from reception, past my office, to the enticingly named Restaurant 1.

And who knew that sheets of corrugated aluminum tacked on the exterior of an otherwise unadorned office complex could constitute a design element?

As I walk the halls that lead to my office, grey steel filing cabinets, empty or filled with the detritus of decades, line the corridor. Dimly lit, off-beige walls last painted before I first visited over two decades ago, I?m sure, get their only color from posters announcing the latest conference of yesteryear. Discarded electronics, long the ubiquitous decoration for every spare public surface, are now relegated to special bins, so nothing obscures the spare grey metal desks banished to the hallway from this office or that.

The last few steps to my own office pass through a short corridor, recently painted in various shades of green; but open the door and the only color visible is across the paint-chip littered windowsill, through the dirt-coated window, into the car-bestrewn grassy courtyard. Grey steel bookshelves, and grey steel desks, as if freshly imported from a Kafkaesque nightmare of East European Communist bureaucracy, fail to hide walls desperate for a lick of paint. A poster, taped squarely in the middle of one wall by a long-departed occupant, appropriately features Picasso?s sketch of Don Quixote, that patron saint of windmill tilting. As tattered as its subject, it too has seen better days.

And yet ? this is a place where particle accelerators get turned on thanks to multinational funding commitments and years of concerted effort. A place where great discoveries are repeatedly made and where the web was invented. A place where scientists from around the world gather to speak to one another, and to work to a common purpose. Maybe that (and decent coffee) matter more than anything else.

Gunmen kidnap 6, including aid workers, in Niger

NIAMEY (Reuters) - Niger security forces have cornered gunmen who kidnapped six people, including four aid workers from Niger and Chad, from the town of Dakoro in central Niger overnight, military sources said on Monday.

"Defense forces were able to locate the kidnappers moving in the Tassara-Tillia pastoral area (near the border with Mali)," one military source said, requesting not to be named.

"The kidnappers are virtually surrounded. However, the forces have been instructed not to endanger the lives of hostages," the source added.

At least one hostage was injured when the gunmen broke into the house and seized the aid workers as they were sleeping, state radio and local government officials said.

Those kidnapped included three local staff working for Nigerien medical charity BEFEN and a Chadian working for Alert Sante, the aid groups said in a joint statement sent to Reuters.

Both groups had been treating malaria and looking after malnourished children in the area, they said.

There were no details on the other two hostages.

Nigerien security sources said troops had been deployed on the ground to look for them and aircraft were monitoring traffic into the Air Mountains and other northwestern border areas, where they said the hostages appear to have been taken.

Gunmen linked to al Qaeda factions operating in the Sahel and Sahara zone have kidnapped people in Niger and taken them to neighboring Mali in the past, although usually they target Westerners for ransom payments.

"The latest information we have is that they have made it into Agadez region through the area west of Ingall," a security source told Reuters, asking not to be named and referring to towns in Niger's vast desert north.

"Measures have been taken to stop them from entering Mali and Algeria," the source added.

Ransoms paid for Western hostages have earned Islamist groups in the region millions of dollars officials say, even though payments are never officially confirmed.

Aid agencies rely on staff from the region to carry out virtually all their work in Niger, which is recovering from a food crisis this year, due to the threat against Westerners.

The Islamist takeover of the north of neighboring Mali has created a security void, opening up a safe haven for extremists and organized crime.

Sunday Sound: Heard on 'This Week'

Below are some of the notable comments made Sunday on "This Week with George Stephanopoulos." Guests included Ohio Sen. Rob Portman; Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden former House Speaker and 2012 Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich; former Senator and 2008 Democratic presidential candidate Chris Dodd; Senior Foreign Affairs Correspondent Martha Raddatz, moderator of this week's vice presidential debate; presidential historian Richard Norton Smith; ABC News' George Will; and Democratic strategist and ABC News Contributor Donna Brazile.

    HEADLINERS

    1. Portman anticipates Obama's performance for Tuesday's second debate PORTMAN: I think President Obama is going to come out swinging. I think he's going to have to compensate for a poor first debate, and I think that'll be consistent with what they've been doing this whole campaign, Jake, which is running a highly negative ad campaign.

    2. Presidency can 'probably' be won without Ohio

TAPPER: Let's look at the latest poll from after the first debate. It shows President Obama in the lead in Ohio still, 51 percent to Romney's 45 percent. Does Governor Romney have a path to the presidency without Ohio? I know you're going to say that he's going to win Ohio, but can he win the presidency without it?

PORTMAN: Look, he can probably win the presidency without Ohio, but I wouldn't want to take the risk.

    3. Biden defends his father's facial expressions during the VP debate BIDEN: I'm happy to defend my dad. I don't think he needs any defensiveness. Any time the other side - Karl Rove or folks on the far right - are going after my father for smiling too much, you know that's a victory. My father spoke clearly to the American people about the facts, and you saw him do that for 90 minutes straight. You know, this isn't, Jake, about how much my father smiled or how many gallons of water that the congressman drank nervously on that stage.

    4. Biden comments on Ryan's point of pulling troops out of Afghanistan BIDEN: The congressman is not quite up to speed on foreign policy?I'm not sure if he knows what the strategic point he was making was.

    5. Biden considers Romney and Ryan's criticism 'outrageous'

TAPPER: ?your father raised some eyebrows when he was asked about requests for more security from diplomats on the ground in Libya. Here's what he said.

    (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

    J. BIDEN: Well, we weren't told they wanted more security again. We did not know they wanted more security again.

(END VIDEO CLIP) BIDEN: He was speaking for himself and the president?the idea that Romney and Ryan are suggesting that the president of the United States doesn't take seriously the security of our diplomats and Foreign Service officers around the world I find absolutely outrageous, especially outrageous coming from the congressman

"DO PRESIDENTIAL DEBATES CHANGE ELECTIONS?" PANEL

    6. Romney's debate performance didn't match previous perceptions GINGRICH: I thought Romney, frankly, was helped because the Obama campaign spent three months portraying him as a person he's not, and people saw him and said, wait a second, that's not the guy I've been frightened about.

    7. Gingrich thinks match-up was 'extraordinary' GINGRICH: The big surprise to me was the emptiness on the other side. I mean, what made that debate so startling was Romney was better than people expected and Obama was unbelievably less capable than people expected, and it was the match-up that made it so extraordinary?if Romney had had as bad a debate as Obama, we would be sitting here talking about the election being over

    8. Dodd distinguishes between primary and general election debates DODD: Debates?in the primary process are very different than what we're watching today at the presidential level? We're dealing with constituencies where you have to sort - check certain boxes in order to become a credible candidate.

    9. Dodd tells Obama campaign to 'move beyond' the debate DODD: The fact that we had been dwelling on this for the last 10 days - in fact, the president's team (inaudible) dwelling on it, I don't think helps at all. I think you have to move beyond this.

    10. Biden was 'too big' and 'aggressive' for the table RADDATZ: But one of the things I think Joe Biden did was?in that little intimate table, it was very small, he was too big. He was like he was at a campaign event. So you could even - you could feel that, especially at that table, that - that Joe Biden was so aggressive.

    11. Will criticizes the format of the next debate WILL: This next debate will - with interacting with the audience will be part of the Oprah-fication of American politics, where we elect a national talk show host, and I think it's unfortunate that we do this.

    12. Brazile gives advice to Democrats BRAZILE: I think the Democrats have got to just stop trying to fact-check the Republicans every time they open their mouths and get back to talking to the American people?

    13. Debate promises don't 'really come out to be true' RADDATZ: People have to remember that what you hear isn't necessarily going to happen and that there are promises kept or we're going to do this and we're going to do that, it doesn't really come out to be true.

Time for Rating Agencies to Take India Off Negative Watch

Mumbai: It is time for global credit rating agencies to take India off the negative watch list, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia said even as a leading firm last week threatened of a possible downgrade of the country within 24 months.

"I don't believe there's an iota of information that would suggest taking a negative step.

"The real issue for rating agencies, if they are reading the signals right, is whether they're going to remove the negative watch (on India)," Ahluwalia told a banking conference organised by Yes BankBSE and Financial Times.

Later, when reporters asked him whether he was hinting that the rating agencies should upgrade their forecasts on the country, Ahluwalia said, "Absolutely. I'm quite certain that things are going to improve."

He further said, "If you are running a rating agency and say 'we are putting India on a negative watch', which is what they did four months ago, and you also have somebody updating India, my guess is that whoever is doing the updating will say there's a lot of good news.

"Is it good enough to upgrade India or is it good enough to remove the rating negative watch, that's the issue."

Last week, Standard & Poor's had said there was "one- in-three chance of the country's sovereign rating being junked", which will place it to non-investment grade level.

It cited high fiscal deficit driven by high subsidies, policy inactions, high current account deficit among other issues as potential causes for junking the sovereign rating.

In June, S&P had kept the country under rating watch list. The current rating given by S&P is BBB- with negative outlook.

The government has taken enough measures for everyone to see towards fiscal consolidation like cutting LPG subsidy by half and allowing foreign direct investment into many sectors, Ahluwalia observed.

    Severe Weather Threat Update

We?ve got a few passing showers getting ready to move into Johnson, Tarrant and Denton Counties from the west. We do not expect any severe weather with this rain.

This rain is taking some of our instability away, softening the risk of severe weather later this evening in the metro area. Once this rain clears the atmosphere will only have an hour or so to recharge.

To our west a squall line is taking shape ahead of a cold front, it is currently west of Abilene and Wichita Falls. We expect severe weather to be in our western counties by late afternoon. There is a TORNADO WATCH in effect until 9pm just to the west of the Metro:

tornado watch Severe Weather Threat Update

I expect to see a tornado warning within the next hour over near Seymour (SW of Wichita Falls). The worst of the weather will be outside of our area to our west for the next several hours.

They should be effecting our western counties by 5:00-6:00pm. There is a high risk of damaging winds and large hail with these storms, a slight risk of isolated tornadoes.

These storms will be in the metro area later this evening closer to the 10pm-Midnight. Severe to strong storms (but a much smaller risk of tornadoes) could bring some damaging winds, very heavy rain and small hail to the metroplex.

Overnight will have to monitor the threat of localized flooding from Dallas County to the east. Rain and a few storms could still be in east of the metro by tomorrow morning as the front moves through.

Weapons charges dropped in Madonna stalking case

(AP) ? A New York City judge has dismissed weapons charges against a former firefighter who was arrested outside Madonna's apartment building two years ago.

Police say Robert Linhart parked his SUV outside the Material Girl's Central Park West apartment, laid out a tarp and spray-painted poster boards with love notes. One said, "Madonna, I need you." Another read: "Tell me yes or no. If it's yes, my dream will come true. If it's no, I will go."

The New York Post reports (http://bit.ly/TfbUiR ) that Manhattan state Supreme Court Judge Analisa Torres ruled Friday that police improperly seized a gravity knife and an ice pick from Linhart when they arrested him.

A resisting-arrest charge is still pending.

Linhart's lawyer, Lawrence LaBrew, says Linhart maintains his innocence.

A slice of heaven in the Cascade Mountains [VIDEO] and ideas on ...

I just completed a video for the nicest property my brokerage has listed so far this year, a helicopter-logged Canadian Western Red Cedar custom built log home in Snoqualmie Pass. Not a lot ?green? about that there statement, but it was built in 1998 and has the original owner in it, and this home could easily last for 100 years. It is surrounded by the forest, water, and wildlife. The driveway alone is eight tenths of a mile long and you can only access the house via snowmobile once the snows come (about Thanksgiving through April).

Even thought this home is not green, and the trees that made this home may or may not have come from a sustainably managed forest, I think you could tread a light footprint here if you were conscientious about your lifestyle, and if you became an advocate for the native flora (Washington Native Plant Society), fauna, or even volunteered with a group like the Washington Trails Association since the property is right on Gold Creek Pond, you could do some good.

Please share with anyone you think will appreciate the beauty of this environment or lifestyle.

Self-Help Ideas To Optimize Your Quality Of Life - ProjectPB ? The ...

Understand that not all self improvement strategies work for everyone, so you should find what works best for you. To succeed in reaching the personal development goals you set for yourself, it is important that you educate yourself and never stop learning. The information contained in this article will help you grow as an individual.

In order to succeed and become a champion, it?s imperative to have a great coach. Every champion has a great coach; the advice of a knowledgeable mentor is priceless. Helpful experience is meant to be shared with those who need it. It would be difficult for anyone to do their best in any field without any guidance. Behind every star, there is a spectacular coach.

TIP! If you hope to advance your state of knowledge regarding personal development, it can help to show a little humility. By accepting your insignificance in the grand scheme of things, you begin to comprehend your ignorance and lack of wisdom.

Do you feel like you drink too much alcohol? Are you a smoker, or do you regularly engage in something that is bad for you? The human body is sacred and it is important that you treat yours right. If you want to start improving your life, you have to stop engaging in harmful activities. Assess your life and what habits you have, and see if there are any that you could work on omitting.

Look for different sources of encouragement, like books. This could be a holy text for some people. For others, it could just a book of inspirational sayings. It is a good idea to turn to something tangible when you are in need of a little push to keep going through the challenges that life has to offer.

With any good personal development goal, you should be able to see the distance between your current state and the one you want to achieve. You need to understand and embrace this before you can move forward. If you do not know this, you are not ready to begin personal development.

TIP! An important new trait called sexual capitol is currently being researched. It does not translate to using sex to get everything you want.

Seek out new challenges. New opportunities can be gained from trying new things. You can learn new skills and gain knowledge. You may even be able to accomplish something previously not achieved by anyone. Do what you want to do, rather than what others do.

You need to know that you deserve the best when you are embarking on a journey of personal development. With persistence, patience and hard work, you will soon reach your initial goals. When your journey is complete, you will realize how important it was to give things your all.

Get some self-satisfaction by complimenting others. Fighting this trend and complimenting others changes your mindset and makes you a kinder person.

TIP! Figure out what is really important to you and focus on those things in your life. You will find an increased inner peace if you do not dwell on the past or negative encounters, and choose instead to think and act on positive experiences.

Failure at some task can seem like a devastating injury to your self confidence. Failure doesn?t have to leave you feeling down, think about it as a learning experience. Failure can teach you a great deal about what your strengths and your weaknesses are. Every thing you fail at, you should be proud of, it is just another part of you!

Remember that you cannot please everybody, and that you should be your own top priority. This doesn?t mean you should place your own preferences above those of everyone else; however, you should take your happiness and your own opinion seriously and take good care of yourself. Your personal development plan will increase your happiness as long as you uphold your own code of ethics and moral standards.

Use your work time efficiently. This trick involves taking more breaks when working. This may seem like it is counterproductive, but if you take a break you will reduce the amount of stress you have and get more done.

TIP! Your own personal development goals need to be specific so that they can help pave the road towards success. If you set goals that are clearly laid out, you will improve your chances of meeting or surpassing them.

If you are looking to achieve success in your life, start by studying those who have already attained great success. Then, intertwine some of their habits into your own success plan. Start with a couple habits and then practice them until they?re permanent parts of your life. It takes about 3 weeks to solidify any type of habit, so push through that first month.

Many times, stress is the thing that robs people of happiness. When our minds are stressed, our mental and physical bodies are harmed. If we want to think clearly and strive for our goals with neat, calm purpose, we must eliminate the stress in our minds. Take the time out of your day to sit down and clear your head. Taking a little bit of time for yourself will help you stay calm, and keep your goals in mind.

You do not need stress in your life. Reacting too strongly to negative events will just make you more stressed, which is the last thing you need. Remind yourself that sometimes things do go wrong when you are working toward a goal; instead of feeling beaten when these things happen, look for methods to deal with the hurdles.

TIP! Instead of bragging about achievements, you should ask others about theirs. This helps you discover what other people have accomplished to help you respect them which in turn betters your character.

Being a selfless person is a big step forward towards your own personal development. You can cultivate a strong, positive character, by learning how to make sacrifices for the sake of helping others. Making sacrifices for others can help you to transcend feelings of selfishness and jealousy.

Listening is equally as valuable as speaking when you are communicating. Listening definitely holds true for developing yourself. Remember to also listen to your own words when you are expressing them. Listen to yourself in order to be a better person.

Find people you can relate to. This helps strengthen your resolve, reinforces positive thinking and keeps you away from toxic people that harm your dreams and goals.

TIP! Faith is important to your plans for personal development, and love is what keeps your faith alive. Faith seldom exists without the accompanying emotion of love.

It?s good if you take to heart the information you were just given. However, in order to gain the most benefit from this advice, you have to start implementing it. Trying to be successful is the only way to actually achieve success. You will notice a great improvement in your well being and self improvement by applying these tips to your life

High Street vs Online - the impact of internet retailers | Games - MCV

Kantar World Panel analyst Laurie Krohn discusses the changing face of retail and why it?s important to support the High Street retailer...

The face of British retail is changing ? and it has been for some time. The growing popularity of online shopping has brought a number of new challenges for physical retailers and in particular specialist stores. Although this has prompted fears over the death of the High Street, specialists are still crucial players in the games market.

The challenges faced more widely by the retail sector have taken their toll on the physical entertainment market: annual sales through the High Street have fallen by a fifth (19 per cent) since August 2010. And High Street retail of boxed games has been hit particularly hard, seeing its sales value decline by over 30 per cent.?

The immediate reason for this is a decline in buyer numbers.? In the year to August 2012, games retail on the High Street saw 2.5m fewer buyers than it did during the same period two years ago. This is equal to a quarter of all former shoppers and represents ?140m in lost revenue.? There are a number of reasons for this staggering drop in consumers that affect the boxed games market as a whole rather than just the High Street ? including the recession, the rise of digital and the decline of the Wii.?

However, boxed games sold online are declining at 11 per cent ? less than half the rate of the total market decline (26 per cent) ? meaning that internet retailers have substantially increased their share of the market, which has grown from 24 per cent to 29 per cent since 2010.

The popularity of online channels is taking its toll on specialist stores in the UK. The UK has a particularly high internet penetration compared with the rest of Europe ? Internet World Stats shows that as of 2012, it had penetration of 84.1 per cent compared with the European average of 61.3 per cent. It also has a more mature online retail base than elsewhere on the continent with consumers more geared towards online purchases for all sorts of products.

Online stores are also stealing share from mail order retailers such as Argos, which are almost non-existent in the games market now, having fallen from 1.2 per cent of boxed games value share in the year to August 2010 to 0.1 per cent in the year to August 2012.? Essentially, online firms now fulfil the same function that mail order retailers did in the past ? offering infinite shelf space and performing well in gifting and planned purchases, with 71 per cent of games sold through internet retailers being planned with a particular title in mind (compared with the market average of 58?per cent).

The analysis above looks at the retail landscape in reference to boxed games, but when digital purchases are included the picture becomes even starker. Internet retailers took 35 per cent of total (physical and digital) games value in the past year and are now very close to overtaking the High Street, which took 39 per cent.

Online retailers are expected to continue to consolidate their position and this is likely to have an effect on the number of specialist retailers on the High Street. But what are the implications for the games market?

In the short-to-medium term at least, we would expect a negative impact on overall market value. This is because internet retailers are not as accessible as High Street stores for older shoppers ? and these shoppers are particularly important to the market as they are the most likely consumer group to buy games as gifts or for family use. While it?s easy to underestimate the value of games purchased for these two reasons, they have actually made up the majority of boxed games sales volume over the past year.

With fewer High Street stores, the older demographic will be less likely to encounter outlets selling games including the awareness of games and making it more likely that they will not be top-of-mind for?the shopper.?

Losing the browsability of High Street stores would also contribute to the decline of boxed games, of which 53 per cent are purchased in specialist stores, making ?96m of sales over the past year. These are bought where a consumer either didn?t plan to buy a game or wanted a game but didn?t have a particular title in mind. In contrast, for the internet, this figure is only 29 per cent.

Despite the troubled times specialist retailers face, they still play an important role for the games industry. Publishers would therefore be wise to support their High Street base. The recent move to extend the time period for big games releases in the second half of this year is a step in the right direction.

Create An Unique Living Space With These Great Ideas | Find New ...

If you are a handy man, then you can do a lot of work on your home on your own. One of the easiest and most rewarding projects that you can do yourself is to add a deck made of wood to your back entrance for events.

If you find the home improvements you want to make overwhelming, only do one at a time. This can help you to finance the project yourself by allowing you time to amass some savings and can make the situation a lot less stressful. Take your time and enjoy your home as each upgrade is completed.

For the budget-minded homeowner working on a plumbing home improvement project, plastic PVC piping makes an entirely suitable substitute for expensive copper piping. PVC has been extensively tested and used for years without danger or failure. It is easy to work with and highly durable. The money saved by using PVC can be applied to more visible, usable home improvements.

If you are looking to spruce up the exterior of your house, first think about the last time the exterior of your home was painted. Consider repainting or resurfacing the walls to give your home a fresh look. Also remember to take the time to patch, repair, or replace any damaged areas as well.

Be flexible with your time. While you may expect a project to be done in a few weeks, you may need to plan in advance for it to take a bit longer. Life can sometimes get in the way of project completion, so spare yourself from disappointment, by giving a little leeway.

Use paint made for touching up appliances to cover up flaws on ceramic tile. Did you chip one of your tiles moving furniture? This type of paint will make it look almost as good as new. It dries hard with a glossy color that is hardly distinguishable from the surface of the tile itself.

Need to improve the walls in your home? Apply joint compound in relatively thin coats, and sand each spot so that it?s level with the wall after dries. This works for patching nail holes as well as fixing cracks in your walls. If you are not priming the walls before painting them, apply some of the new paint over the patched spots before rolling the color onto the walls. The patched areas may absorb more paint, so giving them an extra layer at the beginning will help to ensure an even look.

Do not panic if you scuff the corner of a wooden piece of furniture, trim or cabinetry. Instead, grab your iron and a damp napkin. Wet the damaged corner lightly, then apply the heated iron to restore the finished color and grain of the wood to the area that was scratched.

If you have chosen to replace your roof with a metal one and need a vent there are different types that you can use. For each type of roof type you will need to choose the one that will be the most efficient for you. Do your research and choose wisely.

Think you need to re-tile your bathroom? Try cleaning the tile and re-grouting first. Using this method can save you time and money over a complete re-tile project. It?s also easier to achieve by yourself. A toothbrush is a wonderful tool to use when cleaning grout. A quality steam mop can make a huge difference as well.

No matter what your budget, there are plenty of ways to get a better-looking home. Keep these tips in mind the next time you look around your house. You should easily be able to find a do-it-yourself project that will make your home feel like new again.

To ensure the best quality springfield mo home builders you?ll want to take your time and choose the best company for you.

Unexploded bombs lurk off US coast

Disposed World War II explosives and munitions in the Gulf of Mexico pose a threat to offshore oil drilling, according to Texas oceanographers.

In this April 2010 file photo, an oil rig is seen in the Gulf of Mexico near the Chandeleur Islands, off the Southeastern tip of Louisiana. As technological advances allow oil companies to push deeper into the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, forgotten hazards pose a threat.

It is no secret that the?United States, along with other governments, dumped munitions and chemical weapons in oceans from 1946 until the practice was banned in the 1970s by U.S. law and international treaty, said?William Bryant, a?Texas?A&M University professor of oceanography.

As technological advances allow oil companies to push deeper into the waters of the?Gulf of Mexico, these forgotten hazards pose a threat as the industry picks up the pace of drilling after?BP?Plc's deadly Macondo well blowout in 2010 that lead to the largest oil spill in U.S. history.

Unexploded ordnance has been found in the offshore zone known as?Mississippi?Canyon where the Macondo well was drilled.

The?Bureau of Ocean Energy Management?(BOEM) will auction 38 million acres of oil and gas leases in the central gulf in March.

The?U.S. government?designated disposal areas for unexploded ordnance, known as UXO, off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, as well as in the?Gulf of Mexico. But nearly 70 years after the areas were created, no one knows exactly how much was dumped, or where the weapons are, or whether they present a danger to humans or marine life.

"These bombs are a threat today and no one knows how to deal with the situation," said Bryant. "If chemical agents are leaking from some of them, that's a real problem. If many of them are still capable of exploding, that's another big problem."

Disposal zones were designated from?Florida?to?Texas, said Bryant, who will discuss his research findings at the International Dialogue on Underwater Munitions conference that begins Monday in?San Juan,?Puerto Rico.

While the practice of dumping bombs and chemical weapons, including mustard and nerve gas, in the ocean ended 40 years ago some effects are just beginning to be seen, saidTerrance Long, founder of the underwater munitions conference.

"You can find munitions in basically every ocean around the world, every major sea, lake and river," Long said. "They are a threat to human health and the?environment."

The oil industry is no stranger to leftovers from the World War Two.

Last year,?BP?shut its key Forties crude pipeline in the North Sea for five days while it removed a 13-foot (4-metre) un exploded German mine found resting cozily next to the pipeline that transports up to 40 percent of the UK's oil production.
